Thrust Areas: Clinical Microbiology, Hospital Infection Control, Quality Control, Health Care Associated Infection Surveillance, Diagnosis of Opportunistic Infections, Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring, Hospital Bio Medical Waste Management.
The Microbiology Department provides robust timely reporting with clinical correlation and works in close coordination with the clinicians and other diagnostic services in the hospital for effective therapeutic intervention. Department of Microbiology has a policy to inform critical reports to concerned clinical team at the earliest for better and effective patient management.
Bacteriology and Serology diagnostic services are available at HBCH & MPMMCC. Mycology, Mycobacteriology, and Molecular Microbiology services are established at HBCH. Scheduled specimen transportation shuttle service is available among both the centers.

The Microbiology Department’s faculty, Scientific Officers and technical staff take keen interest in research and participate actively in the scientific research projects and publications.
The Department conducts regular infection control rounds in all the wards, OPDs, ICU and BMT of the hospital and training classes for the doctors, nurses and housekeeping staff about infection prevention and control practices to reduce healthcare associated infections. Regular in-service classes is conducted for Nursing OICs twice in month for various hospital infection prevention and control practices.
The Department has been participating in Hospital Acquired Infection Surveillance Network (CLABSI, CAUTI) in collaboration with AIIMS, New Delhi, funded by CDC Atlanta, USA.
The Department contributed immensely during the COVID pandemic.
The Department also caters to the Bio-Medical Waste Management of the hospital. Latest BMW guidelines are implemented and followed for BMW management. Classes are held regularly for the health care workers and they are updated about the changes in the BMW guidelines.
