DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

About

The Microbiology laboratory was commenced at HBCH in May, 2018 and at MPMMCC in Sept, 2020. The Department of Microbiology has three basic responsibilities as diagnostics laboratory services, teaching and training along with translational research activities. The Department has state-of-the-art equipment such as Automated Blood Culture system, Automated Identification and Testing System, Automated Serology analyzer like Vitros-ECiQ, Abbott-ARCHITECT: i1000SR, BioMérieux-MiniVidas, Fluorescent microscope, Closed molecular testing platforms as Biofire (FilmArray) for syndromic infectious testing panels, Gene Xpert, Truenat along with open molecular platforms (Thermofisher-Quant Studio 5DX, BioRad-CFX 96) for Real-Time PCR testing.

The services provided by the department include:

  1. Bacteriology
  2. Serology
  3. Mycology
  4. Mycobacteriology
  5. Molecular Microbiology

Bacteriology and Serology diagnostic services are available at HBCH & MPMMCC. Mycology, Serology, Mycobacteriology, and Molecular Microbiology services are established at HBCH.
Scheduled specimen transportation shuttle service is available among both the centers.

  1. A total of 1,04,626 investigations have been done from 1st January to 31st December 2024. 23,866 investigations were from Bacteriology, 4,443 from Clinical Microbiology section, 756 from Molecular Microbiology, 1096 from Mycobacteriology, 808 from Mycology and 73,657 were from Serology section
  2. Regular infection control rounds in both the hospital and training classes for the all HCWs are being conducted. The Bio-Medical Waste management is an inherent part of the Department of Microbiology. Classes are held for the health care workers about the changes in the BMW guidelines.
  3. Department of Microbiology has a policy to inform critical reports to concerned treating clinical team which includes Positive Blood Cultures (GNB/GPC/Yeast), AFB positive smear, Genexpert MTB positive, CSF Gram stain positive, CSF India Ink positive, CSF culture positive, Malaria Antigen positive, Dengue NS1 antigen positive, Positive Hanging Drop Preparation, Clostridium difficile positive, Multidrug Resistant organism isolated from clinical specimen like MRSA/Colistin Resistant GNB/VRE, Procalcitonin more than & equal to 10ng/ml and pathogens detected in Biofire reports.

Research & Educational Activities:

The department supports research and educational activities for the development and growth of employees.

Education

  • • Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS).
  • • Short-Term Training Certificate Course: Post Basis Clinical Laboratory Techniques.
  • Research

  • Ongoing projects:08
  • International publications:03

Infection Prevention and Control:

The Department has been conducting regular infection control rounds in all the wards, OPDs, ICU and BMT of the hospital and training classes for the doctors, nurses and housekeeping staff about infection prevention and control practices to reduce healthcare associated infections. Regular in service classes is conducted for Nursing OICs twice in month for various hospital infection prevention and control practices.

The Department has been participating in Hospital Acquired Infection Surveillance Network (CLABSI, CAUTI) in collaboration with AIIMS, New Delhi, funded by CDC Atlanta, USA.

The Department has been contributing immensely ever since the commencement of COVID pandemic. Different infection control measures have been put in place and regular monitoring is being done. The Department is also involved in COVID-19 awareness for all the doctors, staff members and security personnel of the hospital. The Department has been participating in “IPC Capacity Building-Orientation Training for COVID-19 Preparedness and IPC for Healthcare Facilities” with AIIMS, New Delhi, Funded by Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, USA.

Bio-Medical Waste Management:

The Department also caters to the Bio-Medical Waste Management of the hospital. In light of the COVID pandemic, BMW management has also been adapted to the latest government guidelines. A total of 1,23,260 Kg Bio-Medical Waste was generated by the hospital during the calendar year 2021 of which 62,472 Kg was Yellow waste, 4,157 Kg was sharp waste, 7,832 Kg was Blue waste and 48,799 Kg was Red waste. Classes are held regularly for the health care workers and they are updated about the changes in the BMW guidelines.
Regular Seminars and Journal Clubs are held in the Department for doctors and the technical personnel. Two trainees have successfully completed training under the Short Term Training Certificate Course in the Department and the third candidate is currently undergoing training. Continuous Medical Education, trainings and workshops are also held to maintain an academic environment in the department.

Achievements:

  1. Conducted CME on "Sepsis management: Blood culture & Biofire for early diagnosis of infections'' on 30th Sept 2022.
