About

The Microbiology laboratory was established at HBCH in May, 2018 and at MPMMCC in Sept, 2020. The Department of Microbiology is a multidisciplinary unit consisting of Bacteriology, Mycology, Serology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology and Molecular Microbiology laboratory. The Department of Microbiology has three core principles in alignment with ethos of Tata Memorial Centre: Service, Education and Research.
The Department of Microbiology is NABL accredited and has various diagnostic tests under all sections of Microbiology along with Clinical Pathology in its scope and is amongst the first few laboratories in this region to do so.

Thrust Areas: Clinical Microbiology, Hospital Infection Control, Quality Control, Health Care Associated Infection Surveillance, Diagnosis of Opportunistic Infections, Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring, Hospital Bio Medical Waste Management.

The services provided by the department include:

The Microbiology Department provides robust timely reporting with clinical correlation and works in close coordination with the clinicians and other diagnostic services in the hospital for effective therapeutic intervention. Department of Microbiology has a policy to inform critical reports to concerned clinical team at the earliest for better and effective patient management.

Bacteriology and Serology diagnostic services are available at HBCH & MPMMCC. Mycology, Mycobacteriology, and Molecular Microbiology services are established at HBCH. Scheduled specimen transportation shuttle service is available among both the centers.

Research & Educational Activities:

The department supports research and educational activities for the development and growth of employees.

Education

  • • Vision of the department is to provide up-to-date and holistic theoretical & practical training for students enrolled under DNB (Microbiology), BMLS, BOTT and Short-Term Certified Technician Training Course to carry out frontline research in all disciplines of Microbiology and to train good academicians, teachers and researchers in the discipline.
  • • Regular Seminars, Journal Clubs and Case Discussions are held in the Department for doctors and the technical personnel. Continuous Medical Education, training and workshops are also held to pursue academic excellence.

    Research

    The Microbiology Department’s faculty, Scientific Officers and technical staff take keen interest in research and participate actively in the scientific research projects and publications.

Infection Prevention and Control:

The Department conducts regular infection control rounds in all the wards, OPDs, ICU and BMT of the hospital and training classes for the doctors, nurses and housekeeping staff about infection prevention and control practices to reduce healthcare associated infections. Regular in-service classes is conducted for Nursing OICs twice in month for various hospital infection prevention and control practices.

The Department has been participating in Hospital Acquired Infection Surveillance Network (CLABSI, CAUTI) in collaboration with AIIMS, New Delhi, funded by CDC Atlanta, USA.

The Department contributed immensely during the COVID pandemic.

Bio-Medical Waste Management:

The Department also caters to the Bio-Medical Waste Management of the hospital. Latest BMW guidelines are implemented and followed for BMW management. Classes are held regularly for the health care workers and they are updated about the changes in the BMW guidelines.

  1. Dr. Anmol Singh: Award for best 3rd oral paper at 6th UP-UK Tropacon 2025 of Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology, UP-Uk chapter, Era Medical College, 3rd August 2025.
  2. Mr. Priyanshu Kumar: Award for the best 3rd oral paper at Vth UPUK TROPACON 2024 of the Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology UP-UK chapter, 3rd August 2025.
  3. Mr. Priyanshu Kumar: Award for the best 3rd oral poster at National Conference HISCICON, SGPGIMS, Lucknow, 5th-8th February, 2025.
  4. Dr. Anwita Mishra: Award in 2nd Advanced workshop on Antimicrobial Stewardship Quiz at JIPMER, Puducherry, July 24th-28th, 2024.

Activities:

  1. CME cum workshop "MALDI: A Necessity or a Luxury" on 29th Nov 2025 at under the aegis of UP-UK IAMM with 3 credit hours allotted by Uttar Pradesh Medical Council.
  2. World Hepatitis Day 2025: Awareness Session on Hepatitis: Update on Diagnostics in Patients & Blood Donors, & Prevention Strategies in Health-Care Workers on 28th July 2025.
  3. World Hand Hygiene Day 2024: Poster competition and training session on 5th May 2024.
