DEPARTMENT OF TRANSFUSION MEDICINE
About
The Department of Transfusion Medicine functions as two licensed blood centres at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Varanasi. The services available in the centres are in accordance with a Surgical center and a Transplant center respectively. MPMMCC and HBCH blood centers collectively had an annual collection of 10,749 Whole blood and 2892 Single donor platelets in the year 2022. The Apheresis unit at HBCH is well equipped with state of the art Apheresis equipments namely ComTec (Fresenius Kabi), Amicus (Fenwal), Amicore (Fenwal), Trima Accel (Terumo BCT), Spectra Optia (Terumo BCT) and MCS Plus (Haemonetics).The services provided by the department include:
- Immunohaematological tests like blood grouping, compatibility tests, antibody screening and identification.
- The department is equipped with Blood irradiator to provide irradiated blood components to the needy patients
- Multicomponent Apheresis.
- The department can boast of an active HLA laboratory with facilities for DNA extraction, HLA Sequence Specific Primer (HLA-SSP) and Luminex platform for HLA antibodies screening, characterization and HLA Sequence Specific Oligonucleotide (HLA-SSO) typing.
- Therapeutic services namely Leukapheresis, Thrombocytapheresis and therapeutic plasma exchange are performed routinely
- Patient Blood Management has been implemented by daily concurrent audits of the blood request forms and engaging in discussions with the concerned treatment team to ensure the right patient gets the right dose of the right blood component at the right time.
- On the transplantation front, both Autologous and Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell harvests and cryopreservation are performed.

Achievements:
- Commenced Fellowship in 'Patient Blood Management in Oncology', the first of its kind in India.
