DEPARTMENT OF PREVENTIVE ONCOLOGY
About
The Preventive Oncology division provides range of services for cancer prevention. We offer community-based and opportunistic screening and early detection of premalignant and malignant oral, breast, and cervical lesions, as well as prevention and risk factor modification, including tobacco cessation for common cancers. The department provides evidence-based management of pre-cancer lesions, regular follow up of high-risk patients, and prompt referral to Disease Management Groups for timely management of diagnosed malignancies. The department is committed to community education program for schools, colleges, occupational groups, and general public, as well as capacity building by training health workers for screening and early detection. The department oversees the population and hospital-based cancer registries under the technical guidance of the Center for Cancer Epidemiology (CCE), ACTREC, TMC, Navi Mumbai. We participate in training of doctors for Medical Certification for Cause of Death (MCCD) for several institutions with the aim of improving the cause-of-death data. Our department has published several research papers in national and international journals and regularly organize CMEs and workshops. Our vision is to develop sustainable cancer prevention strategies for Varanasi, and upgrade the Varanasi Cancer Registry under the technical guidance of CCE.
The services provided by the department include:
- Screening and early detection of premalignant and malignant oral, breast and cervical lesions through community-based and opportunistic screening.
- Prevention and risk factor modification, including tobacco cessation for common cancers.
- Evidence-based management of pre-cancer lesions and surveillance of the high-risk population through regular follow-ups.
- Prompt referral to Disease Management Groups for timely management of malignancies.
- Community outreach projects in Varanasi district for oral, breast and cervical cancer screening and early detection.
- Community education programmes regarding cancer awareness and early detection for schools, colleges, occupational groups, frontline workers, nurses, medical officers.
- Capacity building by training nurses, dentists, medical officers, frontline workers for cancer screening and risk factor detection.
- Maintaining Population and Hospital-based cancer registries under the technical guidance of Centre of Cancer Epidemiology (CCE), ACTREC, TMC, Navi Mumbai.
- Participation in the Medical Certification for Cause of Death (MCCD) training for doctors of various institutions across states and ICD coding of the hospital deaths.
