DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS ONCOLOGY
About
The Childhood Cancer Program was established in 2018 and occupies the refurbished Railway Cancer Hospital, with 22 Pediatric Beds, an ICU, and a BMT unit. There is state-of-the-art radiology, pathology and laboratory testing, and radiation therapy (including sedated treatment for children). The Department is headed up by Dr Vikramjit S Kanwar who trained at the world-renowned St Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis TN and has three decades experience in pediatric oncology, and was recently joined by Dr Raghwesh Ranjan from RCC Thiruvanthapuram. Other staffing support comes from TMH Mumbai with Junior Staff hired locally.
The services provided by the department include:
The Department provides care to Eastern UP and Bihar, covering 24 million children with a steadily increasing volume: in 2022 there were 600 new registrations and 20,000 pediatric outpatient visits. Every kind of childhood cancers is treated on-site with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy as appropriate with acute leukemias making up a significant proportion of cases. We treat all pediatric solid tumors and have a dedicated pediatric oncology surgeon and orthopedic oncologist available on site, but brain tumors are rarely seen as we lack an on-site neurosurgeon. Numerous NGOs help provide support to children undergoing treatment and their families, and with the assistance of the Indian Cancer Society we recently started an After Completion of Therapy (ACT) Clinic for cancer survivors.
