DEPARTMENT OF PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

About

Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine plays a pivotal role in providing support to terminally ill cancer patients and their families, to improve the quality of life and alleviate the sufferings. We have both adult, geriatric, adolescent & paediatric palliative care services, which has eventually become now the tertiary referral centre for part of entire Northern and Central Northern India. The patients’ turn over at our department is approx. 110-125 in number daily. Adult and Geriatric Palliative Medicine Department (MPMMCC Campus) has dedicated OPD and IPD services. We also provide home based palliative care services and community based outreach programme. OPD services include dedicated Comprehensive Pain clinic (availability of all transdermal, subcutaneous, oral, sublingual preparations of narcotics, subcutaneous syringe drivers for Interventional Pain management), Lymphoedema clinic (decompressive and manual massage therapy), Wound and stoma clinic (availability of all hydrogel, hydrocolloid and alginate dressing),Bereavement clinic (complicated grief, major depression), Geriatric and frailty clinic (dementia, frailty). Paediatric and Adolescent Palliative Medicine Department (HBCH campus) has dedicated OPD and IPD services. Teleconsultation based home care has been running successfully for 3 years that enrolled over thousands terminally ill cancer patients those are out stationed. We are doing research in palliative medicine jointly with many reputed institutions nationally and internationally. We also conduct regular CMEs, workshops for doctors, nurses, clinical psychologists, medical social workers, volunteers and KEVATs. We have started postgraduate fellowship programmes for Doctors and Nurses. Very soon, we are going to start our MD/DNB in Palliative Medicine Course recognized by NMC.

Achievements:

  1. We conducted First ever International Conference in this region on "Pain, Palliative and Supportive Care Medicine" -PallEvolution 2023.
  2. Our faculties are instrumental in setting up Pain and Palliative Medicine Department at HBCH&RC, Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
  3. We have signed MoU with Cipla Foundation to develop a state of art Pain and Palliative Medicine Centre in Central and Northern Central area of our country.
  4. Full Accreditation from European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) for Integrated Oncology and Palliative Medicine Centre (at final stage)
  5. Working with World Health Organization (WHO) to make MPMMCC and HBCH Varanasi as WHO Collaborative Palliative Medicine Centre
  6. We conducted symposia on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day in 2021 and 2022.
  7. We conducted CME and workshop on "Advanced Wound Care" for management of malignant/chronic wound and best way for palliation.
  8. We have started Project jointly with premier cancer center in the world - M D Anderson Cancer Centre, Texas, USA.
  9. We are on the process of many reputed international Universities collaboration to become a distinguish center of research and academics in Pain and Palliative Medicine
  10. Our Faculty member is Expert Committee Panel (Analgesic and Rheumatology Division) CDSCO, under DGHS, MoH&FW, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
  11. Our faculties are regularly invited to chair many scientific sessions, webinars, CMEs Nationally and Internationally.
  12. Our faculties are scientific reviewers of high impact journal -"Indian Journal of Palliative Care"
  13. Started full time courses on Post Graduate Fellowship in Palliative Care Nursing (since 2023 session)
  14. In a process to start MD/DNB in Palliative Medicine Course recognized by NMC.
