About

The Department of Oncopathology at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) / Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH), Varanasi provides diagnostic services of histopathology, fine needle aspiration cytology, exfoliative cytology, intraoperative frozen section services, immunohistochemistry (IHC), cytogenetics and molecular pathology for in-house and referral cases from outside hospitals. The department is equipped with three Automated immunostainers (Ventana benchmark Ultra, Ventana Benchmark XT and Ventana Benchmark GX), apart from automated tissue processors, automated slide stainers, grossing stations, microtomes, embedding stations, biosafety cabinet, electrical bone saw, bone decalcifier, cover slip mounting device, cytocentrifuge, and cryostats for intraoperative frozen sections. Molecular pathology services started functioning from October 2021 and offers a wide range of services pertaining to lung cancers, central nervous system tumors, colon cancers and melanomas. Cytogenetic services became operational since June 2022 and renders diagnostic and prognostic services in soft tissue sarcomas, breast cancers, uterine sarcomas and central nervous system tumors.

Achievements:

  1. DM OncoPathology academic course started from 2022 (December session) with two seats, only the fifth medical institute in the whole country to be accorded this privilege.
  2. Molecular Pathology/Cytogenetics laboratory in the Department of OncoPathology was started in 2022. This section has been rendering diagnostic and prognostic services for various DMGs.
  3. Procurement of Automated Immunohistochemistry stainer, Ventana Benchmark Ultra. This department is one of the very few centres in North India to be bestowed with this facility.
  4. Faculty (Dr Zachariah Chowdhury) delivered guest talks at Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh and at NERCON [North Eastern Regional Chapter of Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists (NERC IAPM)] at Guwahati in 2022.
  5. Faculty (Dr Zachariah Chowdhury) delivered a Talk on Lymphomas in online seminar program organized by Qritive, Singapore, July 2022
  6. Faculty (Dr Zachariah Chowdhury) won the 1st prize in Oral Paper Presentation in a CME on Current Trends in Pediatric Pathology organized by Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai in collaboration with ‘The Association of Pediatric Pathologists of India (APPI)’ in August 2022
  7. Faculty (Dr Zachariah Chowdhury) was invited as External Examiner for PDCC Oncopathology course final examination at KGMU, Lucknow in November 2022
  8. Faculty (Dr Ipsita Dhal) invited as panellist in Panel discussions on breast cancer and Paediatric solid tumor sessions in ISMPO-ISOCON 2022, Chennai.
  9. Faculty (Dr Ipsita Dhal) delivered a talk on ‘Expression of Her 2neu and Ki-67 in gall bladder malignancy’ and achieved best oral presentation award in oral presentation in ISMPO-ISOCON 2022, Chennai.
  10. Faculty (Dr Ipsita Dhal) invited as panelist in Panel discussion on management of thyroid cancer, SurgAhead 2022, Varanasi.
  11. Faculty (Dr Paramita Paul) delivered an online talk on squash cytology in neuro oncology organized by AIIMS Rajkot.
  12. Dr Nirotma Tripathi won the 2nd prize in Poster Presentation in a CME on Gynae Oncopathology organized by the Department of Pathology, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer & Research Institute, New Delhi in August 2022
  13. Dr Neha Singh won the 3rd prize in Poster Presentation in a CME on Gynae Oncopathology organized by the Department of Pathology, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer & Research Institute, New Delhi in August 2022.
